SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Some days a pitchers' stuff just works better than others.

Sean Davis and the McCann Tech baseball team found that out the hard way on Wednesday, as Sabis jumped all over the freshman hurler for eight runs over the first three innings. Colin Chapdelaine started things off for the Bulldogs with a grand slam in the first inning and while the Hornets were able to make things interesting. In the end, Sabis was still able to hold on for a 9-7 win at home.

Chapdelaine finished with two hits and five RBIs for the Bulldogs, who chased Davis out of the game by scoring four times in the top of the third frame. Rashaun Faulkner and Leonard Denette each drove in a pair of runs as well for Sabis, which opened a 9-2 lead on McCann (5-7) after the third inning. Davis allowed seven earned runs in just under three innings of work, striking out two and walking three to lower his record to 1-2 this year.

"It was a tough start for Davis, who just did not have his stuff today," Hornets head coach Pat Ryan said. "Sabis is a fast-ball hitting team, and that's just what they did off Sean. We hit the ball hard today but just couldn't seem to find the spots to count them for hits. Kyle Crosier finished the game on the hill, however, and looked very confident allowing only three hits."

Crosier was solid over the final three and one-third innings, allowing the Bulldogs just one more run the rest of the way. McCann rallied back with four runs in the top of the sixth and one more in the seventh, but Sabis reliever Ryan Thomas quieted the rally in the the final frame to earn the save. That gave the win to Cesar Sala, who fanned five batters and walked two in six innings of work.

Senior Mike Chappell led the Hornets' offense, batting 2-for-3 with a triple, one run batted in and two runs scored. Junior Chad Raimer also added three hits, while Davis chipped in with two hits, an RBI and a stolen base.

McCann next plays at Smith Academy at 4 p.m. on Friday.
