NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Pioneer Valley scored four runs in the top of the seventh to upset the eighth-seeded McCann Tech softball team, 7-4, in the first round of the Western Mass Division 3 tournament on Thursday.

Logan Anderson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double to lead No. 8 Pioneer Valley (13-8), which moves on to Saturday's sectional quarter-final at top-seeded Mount Everett (19-0).

McCann (11-10) was led by Alanza Quinones, who went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and an RBI. Lexi Andrews, Jamie Meehan and Haley Malloy each went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Malloy went the distance in the circle, striking out eight.

McCann coach Kate Galli praised her team -- saying that one loss in the tournament cannot erase all that it accomplished this spring.

"I am so proud of my team today," Galli said. "They came out playing hard and focused  from the get-go. We showed intensity and heart and came out aggressive and really wanted this game.

"All season long we have battled one obstacle after another, and still came out with a winning record. It just shows what kind of character these girls have. They have earned a lot of respect around the league and we are no longer a push-over team. This is due to the girls on this squad that showed a lot of fight and dedication the last 2-1/2 months."
