State attorney warns telemarketers to hang up by APrint Story | Email Story
The Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation is warning telemarketers and list brokers that the April 1, 2003 effective date for the Do Not Call Program is quickly approaching. The Do Not Call Program law requires any organization that makes unsolicited telephone sales calls to consumers in Massachusetts to register with the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation and to abide by rules governing telemarketing in the Commonwealth. "Consumers listed on the Do Not Call Registry are sending a strong message to the industry - unsolicited calls are not wanted," said Beth Lindstrom, Director of Consumer Affairs. "Enforcement of this law is something we take seriously and will work closely with the Attorney General to protect the consumer from violators." Attorney General Tom Reilly added, "If you have signed on to the Do Not Call Registry and are still receiving calls after April 1, I encourage you to contact my Office's Consumer Complaint Hotline and file a complaint. The information filed by consumers will help lead us to those telemarketers who are not fully complying with our state's new Do Not Call Program." Consumers can contact the Attorney General Tom Reilly's Consumer Complaint Hotline at (617) 727-8400. There are two ways for solicitors to register with the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation: On the Internet: Register online at www.Mass.Gov/donotcall. The website can be accessed 24 hours day, 7 days a week. By telephone: Call the Solicitor Registration line toll-free at: (866) 339-1475.
