Plans of local investors to buy Gen. Cable building are stalled

Plans of local investors to buy the General Cable building on Water Street for businesses and possibly housing, are stalled, according to organizer Stuart Shatken.     Shatken said yesterday that "we weren't able to come to terms," with General Cable, and that they have been informed by the company that "they are in negotiations with someone else."     The building houses the operations of Tripod, which employs 66 people, but is moving those jobs to Waltham where Lycos, its parent corporation, is located.     "We've all been stopped dead in our tracks," Shatken said yesterday.     General Cable official Lisa Lawson at the company headquarters in Allen Heights, Ky., did not return a telephone call seeking information yesterday.     Shatken said he heard only that General Cable is in negotiations with "someone from Massachusetts, but not from this area."     "It's a mystery to us," he said. "It's disappointing, because we had a lot of good-spirited people, a community-based group, involved in the scrimmage."     Earlier, Shatken had said that Tripod's move to Waltham would not affect the group's plans for the building, seen as a linchpin for the development of Water Street. Other prospective tenants would take up Tripod's slack, Shatken had said.

"We are unable to get proper electricity and heat to the building," according to Executive Director Matthew Alcombright. "We hope that this can be resolved and be open tomorrow."

The project does have some sandwiches and frozen meals that will be distributed at the entry.
