BENNINGTON, Vt. — Southwestern Vermont Medical Center has opened SVMC Dentistry. The medical director for the practice is Dr. Michael Brady; he is joined by dentists Richard Barbierri and Russell O'Connell.

"Proper dental care is essential to overall health, and there is a tremendous need for dental services in Bennington and the surrounding region," said Trey Dobson, chief medical officer at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center and medical director of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Putnam Physicians.

The practice is now open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the newly renovated suite 104 of the Medical Office Building at 140 Hospital Drive in Bennington. Both patients with and without dental coverage will be accepted.

The practice provides a full range of services, from basic care to the most modern treatments. Services include preventive cleanings and treatments, general dentistry, restoration, exams, crown and bridge, implants, and cosmetic dentistry. The practice also provides dental surgery and emergency care, if needed.

Both Brady and Barbierri are relocating to SVMC from private practices, and both have practiced in southwestern Vermont for more than 40 years. The staff from each of the practices have joined the SVMC team, as well, and patients are encouraged to follow the dentists to SVMC.

"This practice leverages the experience of our long-serving local dentists to draw new dentists to our area," Dobson said. "This will provide much needed access to dental care and sustain it for the future."

Brady earned his dentistry degree at Columbia University in New York in 1972 and his bachelor's degree at Villanova University in Pennsylvania in 1968. He started his career as a dental officer in the United States Navy stationed in Florida. He has performed general dentistry in the Bennington area for 43 years, specializing in children's dentistry at Molly Stark Elementary for the last 18 years. He has been a member of Southwestern Vermont Medical Center's medical staff since 1974.

Barbierri received his bachelor's and dentistry degrees at the University of Maryland. In addition, he completed post-graduate studies in craniofacial pain at the Craniofacial Pain Institute in Maryland. He worked at Arlington Family Dentistry for more than 40 years. He is a member of the Bennington County Dental Society, the Vermont State Dental Society and the American Dental Association.

O'Connell earned his degree in dental medicine at the University of New England College of Dental Medicine in Maine. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Caldwell College in New Jersey. He completed externships at Deerfield Valley Dental Care in Wilmington, Vt., and at Mountain View Dental in Whitefield, N.H.

Coggins Auto Group Celebrates Five Years

By Breanna SteeleiBerkshires Staff
BENNINGTON, Vt. — The family-owned Coggins Auto Group is celebrating five years of operations: Coggins Toyota of Bennington and Coggins Honda of Bennington, and Coggins of the Berkshires in nearby Massachusetts.

Mike Coggins purchased three dealerships — Honda, Toyota and Ford — in 2020 with a goal to restore trust and a "true sense of community-minded dealership culture."

"My primary focus from day one was bringing back that connection to the region," Coggins had said back in 2021. "This area values real relationships. They want to know the people they're doing business with. We set out to rebuild that trust."

The Ford dealership was sold off in 2023 and Coggins of the Berkshires, with sales and services for used cars, opened the same year in Pittsfield, Mass.

According to Coggins Auto Group, the dealerships had social media ratings of two stars when they were purchased; now all Coggins locations are garnering more than four stars in customer satisfaction reviews.

"We sell cars, and we fix cars, and our goal is just to make our customers happy, and keep our employees happy, and that's what's made this really work these last few years," said General Manager Scott O'Connell.

Coggins Auto Group is also involved in events that benefit the community, including its popular annual charity golf tournament that funds local charities and organizations such as the Bennington Little League.
