Lee Tops Monument Mountain

LEE, Mass. – The Lee High golf team bounced back from an opening day loss by picking up a win in its home opener on Wednesday at Greenock Country Club.
Matt Abderhalden finished at 4-over-par 39 to take medalist honors and lead the Wildcats to a 169-184 win over Monument Mountain.
Abderhalden said he did not have a great day off the tee but made up for it on the fairways.
“My short game kind of stood out today,” the Lee junior said. “I had a lot of up and downs. I had a lot of good sand saves.
“I was up against the fence on No. 2, and I ended up going up and down. It was a really good shot.”
He said he hit his approach from about 30 yards without a lot of room to work.
“It was a good shot for me,” Abderhalden said. “I barely had any room. I just lofted it right down and just prayed. Sometimes, that’s stuff you’ve got to do in golf.”
He finished with four bogeys but avoided any major trouble in posting his second round in the 30s in two outings this fall.
Jayden Parks (41), David Carlino (42) and Conner Pettibone (47) rounded out the scoring for Lee.
Luke Fenig bounced back from a double on the first hole to pace Monument Mountain (0-2) with a 42 as the Spartans improved by two strokes from their score in their opener at Wyantenuck on Monday against Mount Greylock.
It was an uneventful day for both teams as no one recorded a birdie.
But it was a good day for the Wildcats to settle in at home after taking a one-stroke loss at Hoosac Valley in the opener.
“It really felt nice to get out there,” Abderhalden said. “The course looks beautiful, honestly, out there. The greens are scrolling super nice.
“It was a testament to the team. You know, we had a little bit of a hard loss up at Forest Park, and it was good to come back here and have the team play well together.”
Lee (1-1) goes back on the road on Sept. 11 to take on Wahconah.
The Spartans are off until Sept. 15, when they take on Mount Everett.
